Why do we need a cloud backend when the means to command devices already exists on our own networks?

while I am not going to go into this much detail.. I will say that having had too many cloud backed solutions either die or "enhance" the service with subscriptions and pay walls that remove local functionality for "security", I to have a strict "must be able to run local and without internet" for all of my smart home devices..

Not having an offline/no internet option is why I have not purchased Flair smart vents.. I have looked at them many times, priced out several thousand in kitting out my entire home.. But as long as the product requires an internet connection its a no go for me as well..

There is absolutely NOTHING preventing Flair from going down the FutureHome route (charging a subscription).  They don't even need to go bankrupt.  They can wake up one day and say your devices no longer work without paying us a subscription.

Minimally, assuming they have APIs that are properly secured, they can escrow those keys so if they ever go out of business or charge a subscription they would release the escrow holder would release keys to the owners of the devices so they can figure out how to keep them working.
