Hey Jeff, the back pressure limit is a feature meant to protect your equipment. You wouldn't want to close more than that, otherwise you risk an expensive repair bill. The HVAC motor can only handle so much back pressure from closed vents.

Sal, I understand the reason for the back pressure limit.

I am asking how to make the Flair system aware of vents that it doesn't control so that it can accurately decide when to enable the back pressure limit.

I think you're looking for the setting under:

Home Settings > Thermostats > Smart + Non-smart Vents Used by This Thermostat.

You enter in the total number of vents in your HVAC system, and flair calculates the number of vents it can close.
I believe if you manually close a dumb vent, its best to remove it from the total count as well.

All you need is to set the actual number of vents in your Flair Thermostat settings. bump it up to the correct amount and voila.

You can also artificially increase this number to get more focused AC and still avoid back pressure. We have 9 Smart Vents and 3 dumb vents (sizes Flair doesn't support) but we set vent count to 18 so that it will close 6 of the 9 Smart vents before blocking vents from closing. In our house that allows us to direct all the AC to the farthest parts of the house and the rest of the house cools on the return
