Flair capabilities - questions before purchase...
I'm creating a basement apartment and using existing hvac to heat it. I know that the apartment will get to warm if registers are open all the time. I plan to have one register in 100 sq.ft. bedroom and two in 300 sq.ft. main area. - two pucks. (I'm thinking Flair might be a perfect solution for this...?) - anyways....
1. - I plan on powering them with a 24vac transformer. That power will go straight to vents - right? (not via thermostat? - which will control via wifi?)
2. - Is there a "manual override" on a vent? i.e., can I just close one if I want?
3. - If not #2, could I add an individual switch to each vent power supply? To accomplish that? - and, if so, is there a "default" open or closed position? or would I have a choice with power off?
4. - ..... which makes me wonder - if wifi is lost for any reason, what do the vents do? - stay in position? close?
5. - I've noted that some have mentioned that Flair vents used to have a "50%" open setting but that now it's either open or closed? - no inbetween? Is that right?
6. - Do the Pucks control strictly via temperature settings or can you also schedule them by time?

Hi Chuck,
Answers below:
1. Correct - power to the vents directly. The first Puck in a system is responsible for WiFi and will need power. Additional Pucks can be powered with the included microUSB cable+adapter OR the included AAAs. If you don't want a wired Puck in a living space, you can also use an additional puck strictly for networking.
2. When the system is in Auto, it will manage the vents based on temperature. In Manual mode, you can set each vent manually. If you wanted to override the temperature based control in auto, the simplest way to do it is to pick a higher (during heating) or lower (during cooling) setpoint for that that room will be thinking it needs more heat or more AC.
3. We wouldn't recommend using a switch as it won't do anything for the vent like you are suggesting. Once power is removed, the vent will stay as it was. The override suggested in #2's answer will work better.
4. If WiFi is lost, if the link between the Puck or Vent is lost, or in the event of a low battery (doesn't apply if you are wiring), the vent(s) will open up.
5. Some vents have had 50% as an option but with parrallel blade dampers, "50%" doesn't really mean 50% and during automation, 50% didn't end up making as much sense as a clear open/close and as such we elected to simplify things for now.
6. The system in Auto mode will control vent positions and thermostat integrations thermostatically however every room's setpoint or 'inactive/away' status can be set individually and on a schedule. So I was wondering if you need a puck for wifi connection to be available for the vent? From my understanding you do need one.. I just want to confirm. Also I only want this for one single room in my house. So all I need is one standard puck plugged in for the vent to work right? And last question is, if you need a smart thermostat to connect to? Yeah because when I first saw this product my Impressions was you could just have the vent by itself it would connect to Wi-Fi Google all that stuff and you'd be set?

Every Flair system requires at least one Flair Puck configured as a Gateway and connected to your home WiFi. This single Flair Puck can control multiple vents, generally ones in the same room as the Puck. Our Flair Pucks are the only Flair device that connects to WiFi. The Flair Smart Vents will connect to and get commands from a nearby Flair Gateway Puck. You don't need a Smart Thermostat. Flair can work alongside any thermostat to redirect airflow in your home, opening and closing Smart Vents based on current temperatures. Our Smart Vents can tell when the system is heating or cooling by reading the duct temperature. We can also integrate with several of the most popular Smart Thermostats: ecobee, Honeywell, and Google Nest.
