Overview
Geolocation technology allows tracking the location of a device. Flair can be configured to use this geolocation technology to automatically update the Home and Away status of your Flair home as you come and go.
Flair's geolocation feature allows for the geolocation of multiple users to be factored into the Home/Away decisions. When all users are marked as outside the 300m geofence radius, the Flair structure will be set to Away. When any of the users configured for app geolocation are within the 300m radius, the Flair structure will be set to "Home". We recommend that each user configure geolocation on their primary cell phone only.
Requirements
Flair's geolocation feature requires the following:
- The Flair app running on an iOS or Android device.
- The Home/Away Mode must be set to App Geolocation.
- In the Flair app, tap the main menu button, tap Home Settings, tap System Settings, and ensure that the Home/Away Mode option is set to App Geolocation.
- Geofencing must be toggled on
- In the Flair app, tap the main menu button, tap Device Settings, and ensure that Geofencing is toggled on. The slider will be to the right and will be Orange.
- Location permissions must be granted as "Always" for the Flair app
- In your mobile phone settings, please ensure that location permissions are granted for the Flair app and ensure that it is set to "Always". If you instead choose "Only while using the app," this can lead to missed events and is not recommended.
- For geofence events to register, your phone must be powered on
Recommendations
- We recommend that you leave the Flair app open in the background. This does not negatively impact the battery life or performance of your phone, and helps to prevent the OS from deprioritizing or revoking permissions.
- We recommend that you disable the Android setting "Manage app if unused".
- This setting allows the OS to remove app permissions or stop background activity for apps that have not been opened in a while, and can negatively impact geolocation events in Flair.
Note: If you are not home and your phone is off, when you come home and turn on your phone, Flair will get the geofence event once the phone is unlocked. If you have a passcode on your phone, when you power it on, events won’t fire until the passcode is entered.
Improvements
In 2026, we made some improvements to our app geolocation feature to ensure the Home/Away status is set more reliably. We perform routine check-ins to ensure the Home/Away status of each device is accurate. These updates are part of app version 5.4.0.
Geolocation Distance
Flair creates a 300-meter geofence radius centered around the address you specified in the "Home Settings" -> "Manage Home" tab.
Configure Multiple Users
If you want Flair to use multiple phones to determine Home/Away status, each phone must be logged into Flair by a unique user with access to the Flair home. See Add a User / Join a Flair Home.
Change your Home Address
If you change your address in the Flair App, or have had the geofence radius for your Flair home changed, you'll need to restart geofence in the Flair App as follows:
- Log out of the Flair app, then log back in
- In the Flair app, go to "Device Settings" and toggle Geofence off (Grey) and then on again (Orange).
