What are Puck User Profiles?
User Profiles lets you decide how much of the HVAC system can be changed at the Puck itself. This is useful in rentals, short-term stays, and multi-unit properties, where you want guests or tenants to have differing levels of control. For instance, you may want them to be able to change the setpoint, but you might not want them to set the setpoint beyond certain values to avoid wasting too much energy. You likely also don't want short term guests or tenants factory resetting the device or resetting the wifi settings. The Puck 2 User Profiles allows for granular control to make the Puck 2 work for you in these types of environments.
There are four profiles:
- Homeowner: full access — set point, heat/cool mode, room active/inactive, networking (Forget WiFi, Make Sensor). For owner/personal use.
- Guest: set point (within bounds), heat/cool mode, room active/inactive. Cannot change networking. For short-term rentals (Airbnb/VRBO).
- Tenant: set point (within bounds), room active/inactive. Cannot change heat/cool mode or networking. For long-term renters.
- Locked: display only, no adjustments. For kids' rooms, lobbies, public spaces.
Each Puck has its own profile, so you can leave the Puck in your own space on Homeowner and set the Puck in a rental room to Tenant.
Why can’t I change a setting on my Puck?
If your Puck 2 is set to the Guest, Tenant, or Locked profile, some controls are intentionally blocked at the device. Depending on the profile, this can include switching between heat and cool mode, setting the room Active or Inactive, changing Wi-Fi or sensor/gateway settings, or moving the set point outside the heat-mode and cool-mode limits configured for that Puck. On the Locked profile, the Puck displays the room temperature only.
If you need a blocked change made, ask the person who manages the home — the homeowner, landlord, or property manager — to make it from the Flair app or to change the Puck's profile under Home Settings → Flair Devices → [your Puck] → Hospitality.
How do I change a Puck’s User Profile?
A home admin changes the User Profile one Puck at a time, from the Flair app:
- Open the navigation menu and go to Home Settings.
- Tap Flair Devices.
- Select your Puck 2 from the list.
- Expand Advanced Features.
- Tap User Profile.
- Select the profile you want: Homeowner, Guest, Tenant or Locked.
Steps at a glance
Setting a Puck to Homeowner removes the restrictions described above. Changing the profile does not change your schedules, set points, or room settings — it only changes what can be done at the Puck itself.
My Puck 2 is on a Guest, Tenant, or Locked profile and needs to be moved to a new Wi-Fi network. What do I do?
Guest, Tenant, and Locked profiles block network changes at the Puck, including Forget WiFi, Factory Reset, and unlinking from a Bridge. If the Puck loses its Wi-Fi network, it will also be offline, so you won't be able to change its profile from the Flair app.
To make network changes on a Puck 2 set to one of these profiles, press and hold on the Info screen (the screen showing Wi-Fi or connection status). The Puck will display "Puck is in Homeowner Mode for 5 minutes." During that time all Puck controls are available, including Forget WiFi so you can join a new network. After 5 minutes the Puck automatically returns to its configured profile.
Keep in mind that anyone with physical access to the Puck can use this. User Profiles are designed to prevent accidental changes by guests and tenants, not to act as a tamper-proof lock.
Requirements
User Profiles require your Puck 2 to be running current firmware. If you don’t see User Profiles, check that your Puck is up to date: How to check your Flair device firmware.
