If you received a notification that a firmware update was blocked because of low or critical battery, the update was postponed, not failed. Flair will not install a firmware update on a Puck that is running on battery power when the battery is too low to finish the update safely. Once the Puck is back on reliable power, the update is attempted again on its own.
You do not need to reset anything or reinstall the Puck.
What does "Firmware Update Blocked - Critical Battery" mean?
It means one of your Pucks had a firmware update waiting, and Flair skipped installing it because that Puck's battery level was too low. A firmware update takes more power than normal operation, and interrupting one partway through can leave a device unusable — so Flair holds the update instead of starting it.
You may see this wording as either low battery or critical battery, and you may get one message per affected Puck.
How do I resolve it?
Replace the batteries in the Puck named in the message, or temporarily plug the Puck in via USB-C. If using batteries, be sure to use a fresh set rather than ones pulled from another device — a set that still runs a remote or a clock can be too weak to carry a firmware update.
After you replace them, leave the Puck in place and connected to your Flair system. The update is retried automatically; you do not need to trigger it. After the update is done, you can put the older batteries back in if there is still some life in them.
Why did I get this if my Puck is plugged in?
This message is only sent for a Puck that Flair saw running on battery power. If you received it for a Puck you expect to be plugged in, that Puck was not actually drawing power from USB at the time — the batteries inside it were carrying it. Check the following:
- Confirm the USB-C cable is fully seated at the Puck end. A partly seated connector can hold the Puck in place without powering it.
- Confirm the other end is in a powered adapter, and that the adapter is in a live outlet — not one controlled by a wall switch.
- Try a different cable and a different adapter. Phone chargers and cables vary, and some charge-only cables do not deliver power reliably to a Puck.
- Put fresh batteries in the Puck as well. Batteries stay in as a backup even when the Puck is wired, and fresh ones let the update proceed while you sort out the power.
Once the Puck is on reliable power, the update is retried on its own.
Do I have to do anything to restart the update?
No. Flair keeps the update queued and tries again after you replace the batteries or provide USB power. There is no button to press and nothing to reinstall.
Can I ignore the message?
Yes, however your device may not get important updates or enhanced features as they are released.
When should I contact support?
Contact us at support@flair.co if you get the same message again after installing fresh batteries or confirming USB power, and the Puck still has not updated after 30 minutes. Tell us which Puck it is and what you have already tried (new batteries, new cable, new adapter) so we can pick up from there.
